Acoustic Waves: a Soundtrack to Life

For me, the term 'Acoustic Wave' symbolises the power of sound and speech. According to ancient philosophies, our universe was created by the vibration of acoustic waves. Also known as sound waves, or Om, this creative force moves through and connects all life.  In the same way, when we allow our wellspring of thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and stories to flow into spoken words - acoustic waves - we create powerful ripples that can transform our reality.  This is why I believe creating a safe space to hear yourself think and speak your own wisdom are foundational to wellbeing coaching. Of course, the influence of sound in our life goes much further than our own speech.

Actively listening into the sound of the natural world around us also has the power to shape us.  Do you love hearing bird song, a gentle breeze through the trees, the tinkling bell of river waters flowing over rocks? How do you feel when experiencing the roll of thunder through your bones? What does that sound tell you? What are you learning? How does a particular nature sound contrast with other acoustic waves in your immediate environment?

Studies now support what many of us intuitively feel when we hear sounds of nature; they can be calming, healing, energising, or remind us we are part of a bigger picture. Ocean waves, in particular, create powerful acoustic waves that have the potential to soothe and promote wellbeing. This is just one reason many of us love going to the water’s edge. Finding ways to stay anchored to this feeling may also help us surf the waves of everyday life.

With this in mind, we don’t need to be in the wild every day to experience the positive impact of acoustic waves. Wherever we are, we can consciously tap into the vibration of sounds to promote meaningful connection to people, places, and purpose. We might actively choose to use more positive and encouraging words, spend more time in spaces that are peaceful or energising for us, tune into people who lift our spirits, play more inspiring music, the list is endless. So listen closely to what feels good, those acoustic waves may move you in the direction of your deepest belonging.

Personally, I feel in my element by particular coastlines and waters: mo “dùthchas", soul home. I’m drawn to those who speak up for waterways (our life force) and I love being immersed in the sound of the surf. Along with soul-stirring music drifting over air waves, and the caring voices of anam cara (soul friends), these acoustic waves have the most profound and positive impact on my wellbeing.
